The Festival of Festivals

Kannawidan Ilocos Festival is a festival in the Province of Ilocos Sur commemorating the separation of the two Ilocos provinces in 1818. This festival is a showcase of indigenous performances, religious rituals, as well cooking demos featuring the best of Ilocano dishes. It is a celebration that lasts from the last week of January up to the first week of February. Included in the course of events is the commemoration of the foundation day of the province. On the day of the opening, a mass is generally held at the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral. It is followed by a parade around the city of the Patron Saints of the 40 parishes, as well as representations of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. It is the Ilocanos' way of thanking the Almighty not only for the many benefits but also for the city's rich heritage, which includes the Ilocanos' close family ties. The townfolk's profound faith is on display at this festival.

The present COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all of us. Nonetheless, it is heartening to realize that we can still celebrate despite the conditions. We can't enjoy it as we used to because of the high risk of being infected by the virus and the severe health protocols that go along with it. We have less engagement with one another due to our confined mobility and social distance, giving us a different feeling throughout this event. Nonetheless, the thought of enjoying it brings us joy.

Overall, we should be grateful that we have the opportunity to celebrate it. Since fiestas are still important because they can reduce stress and other illnesses induced by overworking, they should be celebrated.
